What is a School Council?

A school council is group of children who are elected to represent the views of all pupils and help to improve their school.

School Council members are elected by other pupils. When there are important decisions to be made, members of the School Council vote on these decisions with the majority vote winning.

Pupils who feel they have the right qualities to be a good member of the School Council and who want to stand for election have to write a short speech saying why they think they would make a good school council representative. Their fellow pupils then vote for their preferred candidate to represent them.

The role of a school council representative is to:

  • Make improvements to our school
  • Communicate our ideas with the whole school
  • Listen to the ideas from the children in our class
  • Try and act on the views of the children in our class
  • Work with our teachers to make the school a better place

Our School Council

Our school has an active School Council which has representatives from Years 1-6. They meet regularly to discuss issues that concern the children such as playtimes, school policies, healthy eating, learning and the curriculum.  This is a priority at Mary Howard to develop children’s leadership skills and involve them in decision making. It is important that our children have a voice with which to share their ideas and bring them to life.

The School Council also works hard to raise money for a variety of different charities including; Comic Relief and Children in Need.
