Willow Class: Bird Classification Stars!
This week, Willow Class became "Bird Detectives" as we dived into Lower Key Stage 2 Science. We’ve been learning how to group living things by looking at their unique features.
What We Learnt:
• Bird Basics: We identified that while all birds have feathers and lay eggs, they can look…
Grouping Living Things: Vertebrates and Invertebrates
In our first science lesson, Willow sorted animals into groups based on shared characteristics. They identified B-road groups of animals including vertebrates and invertebrates recording their data in a Carroll and Venn diagram.
Electrical circuit components
Oak Class started their unit of work about electricity by learning about and correcting matching the symbols used to the correct electrical circuit component. We revisited prior learning and discussed the difference between a good electrical conductor and a good electrical insulator. The…
Science: Volume and Distance
This week, the children investigated how distance can impact volume. We planned our investigation following a science game whereby children making sound traveled closer and further away. We were able to draw the conclusion that the further away we are in distance, the quieter the sound.…
Science: Classifying cold-blooded vertebrates
In Science we have identified vertebrates and invertebrates and looked at cold-blooded reptiles, amphibians and fish. We researched each animal group in teams to create information posters and looked at ways of classifying using a branching key.
Comparing animals
In Science we have been comparing animals. Do you know the difference between a reptile and amphibian? Which animal family has wings and a beak? Reception created some animal collages which stimulated discussion!
Bionic Arms!
Willow had a great time creating their own bionic arm in science! They showed lots of love and perseverance to achieve their end result. Well done!
Is it absorbent?
We have been investigating materials in our science lessons. This week, we were given a challenge to help Wise Wizard find a material to clean up some magic potion! We used the pipettes for the first time to make sure we used the same amount of water in our tests. We identified which materials…
Sundials
Oak Class devised their own sundials in Science this week after learning about the ancient method of telling the time before clocks and watches were invented!
Measuring our Bones!
Willow had lots of fun locating, measuring and recording the length of their bones in Science. Using our results, we were able to make comparisons and conclusions, evaluating what we could also do differently to ensure more accurate results.
Moons
In Science this week, Oak Class learned about the movement of the Moon around Earth. The children defined the term, ‘moon’ and named some of the phases of the Moon, which explain how it looks different at different times of the month. We then researched the moons of other planets and, working…
Our five senses: Smell
In Science we investigated our sense of smell. We were given some picture clues but had to guess what was inside each cup!
